Dorset estate, UK

Private gardens & estate

Few locations in southern England can rival the natural beauty of this historic house and estate. Set at the base of its own valley, it looks out onto Dorset’s World Heritage listed Jurassic Coast.

The new owners undertook extensive building works to restore and save the 17th century house and outbuildings. Tom Stuart-Smith Ltd was commissioned to look at the garden and estate. This included extensive research by landscape historian David Lambert, which informed the landscape design.

The landscape works included improving the setting of the house and creating a new garden and glasshouse in the disused two and a half acre walled garden. Work on the wider estate included replanting park trees and historic woodlands that had been lost.

This project was designed by Tom Stuart-Smith Ltd while Jem was an Associate there. His role was as lead landscape architect.
